Summary

The Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee is holding an inquiry into students and universities. This will include admissions, the balance between teaching and research, degree completion and classification and mechanisms of student support and engagement. The Committee invites evidence on the following issues:

Admissions: The process of admissions (including A levels, apprenticeships and Diplomas) and widening participation strategies.

The balance between teaching and research: Funding for teaching and research, methods of assessing excellence, and assuring quality of teaching.

Degree classification: Plagarism, the appropriateness of degree classifications and maintaining confidence in degree standards.

Student support and engagement: Strategies to reduce non-completion and student support packages.

Next steps

Semta submitted evidence based on its Sector Skills Agreements and ongoing Higher Education strategy.
