Semta response to the consultation on student funding in Wales

Summary

The Welsh Assembly Government has been consulting on student finance for Welsh Higher Education. The consultation considered: remodelling the student finance system; widening participation; tackling student debt; investing in the higher education sector. See more information on the consultation here, and Semta’s full response here.

Semta View

Semta in representing the views of employers across the UK, expressed concern that the location of learning should have less influence on funding than the subject studied. We made representations for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) students to benefit from any changes to student funding. We also recommended that any additional resources generated by the changes should be used to improve STEM teaching facilities and support STEM staff, especially in areas key to the future growth of our sectors, such as nanotechnology and photonics.
