Consultation - Inquiry into Apprenticeships (UK)

Summary

The Skills Commission Apprenticeships Inquiry, chaired by Sir William Taylor, focuses on the progression routes of apprentices and the relationship between apprenticeships and other qualifications.

The Commission invites the submission of written evidence relating to:

  • Learners’ entry into Apprenticeships
  • Progression through Apprenticeships
  • Progression from Apprenticeships into Further and Higher Education
  • Career paths of former apprentices

In particular the Commission invited evidence on the following areas: 

  • IAG and careers education on Apprenticeships
  • Young Apprenticeships
  • The relationship between Diplomas and Apprenticeships
  • Progression from level 2 to Advanced Apprenticeships
  • Progression from Apprenticeships to Further and Higher Education
  • The career paths of former apprentices

Semta made a submission, based on our extensive understanding of apprenticeships, particularly in the areas of the inquiry. Sir Alan Jones (Semta's Chairman) was invited to attend the second evidence session of this inquiry, focusing on the relationship between Apprenticeships and 14-19 Diplomas, and the role of Young Apprenticeships.  This took place on 11 November 2008.

The Commission published its report on 18 March 2009.

Next steps

The government has expressed its support for the recommendations in the report, and will responding in full in the summer.
