Press Release

BAE Systems SFS director appointed chair of marine skills group

Nigel Borowski, human resources director at BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions, has been appointed as the new Chair of Semta’s Marine Sector Strategy Group (SSG), following a nomination from the Shipbuilding and Shiprepairers Association.

The Marine SSG is an employer-led group whose membership includes professional and trade associations, trade unions and other stakeholders in the marine sector. It was formed to guide the development of the Marine Sector Skills Agreement (SSA), launched by Semta in July 2006. The SSA sets out the skills the marine sector needs to sustain growth and competitiveness in the years ahead and identifies how those skills will be supplied.

Lynn Tomkins, Semta’s UK policy director, said: “I am delighted to announce Nigel’s appointment. He takes over from Mike Leece of South West Marine who, along with Ray Davies, led the industry to complete the Marine Sector Skills Agreement. I look forward to continuing to work with Nigel and the SSG on the implementation of the SSA.”

Nigel Borowski said: "The SSG plays a vital role within the marine sector and I am looking forward to taking up the position of Chair. The promotion of skills, learning and development within industry is a key driver in the overall success of the sector and I am keen to support the group's commitment to this."
